Trends include late ‘90s runway glamour, cool hues and more.
August 3, 2026
By: Lianna Albrizio
Editor’s Note: Fall 2026 beauty is shifting away from years of warm, natural minimalism toward a cooler, more sculptural aesthetic rooted in cool-toned nostalgia, statement eyes and soft-focus “cloud skin.” Associate Editor Lianna Albrizio explores new formulations and finishes like Estée Lauder’s first reformulation of Double Wear since 1997, built on updated shade-matching technology, and Armani Beauty’s newly launched Dolci Blush line. Plus, it covers where lip color is headed (think berry stains and oxblood tones replacing high-shine gloss) and the techniques defining the season’s look. Read the full story for a trend breakdown and news from brands like Jones Road, Clinique, Revlon, Glow by Susie, Colourpop and more.
Autumn is ripe for the picking with vamp hues for makeup and fashion aficionados. However, beauty lovers aren’t ditching lighter tones to channel Wednesday Addams just yet. Instead, consumers are entering an “era of expressive sophistication” with bold hues.
“Makeup still feels wearable—but it’s intentionally artistic,” makeup artist Susana Niño, owner of Glow by Susie, told Happi. “This season reads more modern ’90s supermodel. Think Carolyn Bessette Kennedy minimalism, late ’90s runway glamour, or quiet luxury rather than goth girl. We are ready to have fun again after several years of the clean and natural makeup trend. We’re seeing more personality come back through color, shimmer and texture while still maintaining sophistication.”
Makeup looks are multifaceted for the upcoming season. The three major cosmetics trends dominating fall/winter 2026 include cool-toned nostalgia, statement eyes and soft-focus complexion. Lips, Niño added, will take on a mattified look with berry stains, blurred edges, deep rose nudes and oxblood shades over high-shine gloss.
“We’re seeing the return of taupes, slate grays, smoky mauves, icy champagnes, muted plums and cool pinks,” said Niño. “Rather than the warm, bronzy looks we’ve seen for several years, makeup is becoming softer and more sculptural with cooler undertones.”
According to Spate’s Popularity Index, cool-toned blush and contour constitute “the new cool.” According to analysts, cool-toned blush has grown 685.2% year-over-year across platforms. Moreover, consumers are opting for shades with blue, pink or purple undertones that mimic a natural flush. Analysts say Merit Beauty, Rhode Skin and Nars comprise the top brands associated with the cool-toned trend.
“Cool-toned contour is one of the biggest artist trends I’m seeing as well because it creates facial dimension that looks like a real shadow instead of warmth,” said Niño. “The new approach uses taupe, mushroom, gray brown and cocoa to mimic natural facial shadows.”
Consumers can use cool taupe contour under cheekbones, temples, jawline and sides of nose, and blend upward instead of down to achieve a lifted look without looking ‘bronzed,” according to Niño.
To achieve the cool-toned blush instead of peach and coral, Niño is reaching for dusty rose, mauve, soft berry and lilac pink for her makeup.
For blush, Niño’s makeup bag is packed with Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blushes to create a “watercolor effect,” along with cool-toned options from Patrick Ta Beauty and Dior Beauty.
Last month, Armani Beauty introduced its Dolci Makeup Blush, a cream-to-powder blush that the brand says fuses “uplifting, gourmet shades” with a soft-matte effect and high color payoff for up to seven hours.
Samuel Rivera, national face designer, Armani Beauty, says the Dolci collection takes its inspiration from Italian delicacies like the torta di mele, an Italian apple cake made with olive oil and cinnamon.
“At Armani, it’s all about smooth, wearable textures,” Rivera told Happi. “We believe makeup should enhance your natural beauty and feel effortless, and that is the purpose of Dolci—an easy-to-use product designed to add a fresh pop of color.”
He added that cool-toned contouring and cool-toned blush play with natural shadows to enhance the face’s “architecture.” Using products like Dolci Blush that melt into skin and blend seamlessly are essential to achieving this effect, he said. Designed for cheeks and lips, the tactile multi-taskers in Cinnamon (a rich brown with a hint of red) and Mauve add soft a naturally sculpted look while maintaining a fresh, skin-like finish.
Other Dolci Blush hues include Rose, a soft warm pink for a rosy flush; Caramel, a warm beige; and Apricot, a vibrant peach orange for a sun-kissed look.
Beach makeup is also making waves. Spate analysts say the trend has grown 105.9% year-over-year and continues to gain momentum across platforms. Dior Beauty is a top prestige brand associated with the trend, along with other mass-market options like Colourpop.
This past summer, Colourpop released Jelly Much Gel eyeshadow sticks to make a fresh statement in makeup. Its most popular shade, according to the company, is ice blue.
“Blue shadow, smoked liners, frosted finishes and dimensional shimmer are making a comeback, but in a refined way,” said Niño. The trend is a more modern take on the heavier Y2K aesthetic.”
According to Niño, the 2026 version has softer edges, cobalt accents and frosted metallic finishes to pair with fresh skin. Blue also works as lower lash liner, cobalt wing, inner corner or smoky eye instead of a full lid of bright blue shadow, she said.
To achieve a blue-hued eye, Lancôme offers its bestselling Hypnôse 5-Color Eyeshadow Palette in Drama Denim to provide high color-payoff, long-wear and a soft texture for seamless application.
For lids, Niño turns to Urban Decay Moondust and 24/7 Liners, Danessa Myricks for multidimensional metallics and Natasha Denona for cool-toned palettes.
“Makeup by Mario continues to set the standard for modern sculpting and soft definition, while Patrick Ta Beauty continues to influence the industry’s approach to dimensional blush and luminous, lifted complexions,” said Niño. “Danessa Myricks pushes editorial color and luxurious finishes. Victoria Beckham Beauty, Dior Beauty and Hourglass continue to embody the refined, polished aesthetic that’s defining the season.”
In terms of complexion, in lieu of dewy skin, Fall 2026 beauty rule makers are forecasting “cloud skin.”
This is defined by Niño as a natural, blurred complexion with strategic glow rather than all-over glossy finish.
For a breathable matte finish, Estée Lauder introduced an updated version of its Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation. Reformulated for the first time since 1997, the new version utilized insights from 7,500 skin tones and 15,000 skin datapoints. The product now offers 36-hour color-true wear with a matte finish that applies Double Balancing Complex with AlgaNiacin to visibly reduce oil production.
The Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation formula relies on Polymer Mesh Matrix technology to provide transfer-proof, waterproof that is resistant to sweat, heat and humidity. Ingredients including hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide and brown algae extract keep skin balanced, hydrated and comfortable throughout the day, according to the company. Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation is available in 57 shades utilizing “Color Capture” technology to ensure a “true-to-skin” match, per the brand.
Minimalist makeup brand Jones Road Beauty offers Miracle Balm in more than a dozen shades, from Au Naturel to Dusty Rose. The light-reflecting balm, which is designed to give skin a fresh glow, is enriched with jojoba oil to condition, moisturize and soften skin for a smooth complexion. The brand’s newest product, Bright Skin Illuminating Drops, comes in six shades from Rose Gold to Sunkissed.
Formulated with aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder to reduce the appearance of redness as well as plum extract to provide skin conditioning, Bright Skin Illuminating Drops also contain “finely milled pearls” to yield a “sheer radiant finish that’s never overdone,” according to brand officials.
Lips trends are also evolving toward berry stains, deep rose nudes and oxblood shades for Fall 2026.
Innersoul Beauty, the winner of the Indie 360 Pavillion at NYSCC Suppliers’ Day 2026, offers matte lip liners in Rich Berry and Deep Wine that can be paired with the brand’s satin matte lipstick in matching shades.
Jones Road’s The Classic Lip is formulated with shea butter and vitamin E that imparts rich pigment with a satin finish.
In line with autumn’s matte lip trend is NYX Professional’s newly-released Fat Matte Lipstick. Shades like Scarlet Snuggles and Mauve Cloud deliver a “fall feel with a soft, creamy texture infused with raspberry oil and tapioca powders,” according to the brand, which is part of L’Oréal’s beauty stable.
Clinique’s Almost Lipstick in Black Honey, first introduced in 1971, is now available for a pop of color beyond the lips. The Estée Lauder Companies heritage brand is offering Black Honey in a nail polish. It is a limited edition run available for next six months.
An alternative to bold hues is a fresh flush. For example, Revlon’s PhotoReady Instant Plump Serum for lips is formulated with a Fire & Ice Complex. It is said to deliver a tingling sensation and instant plumping results. The result: lips appear volumized and defined with a youthful flush of color. The brand said 100% of users in a consumer study agreed that their lips look more youthful. Fall-centric colors include Jumbo Juice, Spice Show and Youth Boost.
Newcomer Serotonin Beauty debuted this past summer with a Dual Mood Lip Pencil. Fall hues from the brand include Umber Equinox, described as a deep chocolate brown, and Plum Polarity, a rich berry. The lip liners can be paired with the brand’s Lucid Lip Gloss in Halo, a translucent pink formula that delivers shine with a smooth, non-sticky glide, according to the indie cosmetics brand.
Overall, Fall 2026 beauty is about the return of personality.
According to Niño, the coming season will bring cooler, softer, more expressive makeup that feels inspired by 1990s supermodels and editorial fashion, but executed with modern techniques.
